Artist Phillip Steyn

Born in 1975, Phillip Steyn grew up in Mafikeng where his father worked in the
legal office of the then president of Bophuthatstwana.
Phillip was exposed at an early age to the culture of the indigenous Tswana people. In time his interest in African heritage, and self
taught skills merge to give us unique ethnic portrait art.

A quality and style of art that is fresh and provoking, these paintings grace the homes of
many satisfied customers across the globe. The work speaks of the character and beauty of the African tribes dressed in traditional regalia. The depth of emotion,
the expression of colour, the texture and allure of the creations are delightful.

Works in acrylic on canvas exquisitely portrayed, reveal a technique never
seen before. Viewers often remark
on this evoking use of texture and
ask how its achieved. Phillip simply
replies "An artist's style is as
personalized as his signature."
No doubt the result of a decade
of brush milage this 'master of
his medium' keeps
his unique method of painting to
himself but shares his art with all.

These contemporary works each
comes with detailed information about
the ethnic tribe being represented,
the story of each portrait evokes conversation.

Phillip Steyn Ethnic Portraits

Phillip Steyn ethnic portraits gives us a glimps into Africa's past. The people and animals as we might have seen them a hundred years ago, untainted by western influence. This is reflected by his own style and technique of painting, very fluid and textured, the painting is alive with colours. Inspired by the subject matter, the rough textures of Africa, the earth colours and the etched and characteristic faces of its people. A loose and flowing merge of colour, tone and obsession with texture and impastos that would evoke the viewer to touch the work and stimulate the fingertips of the eyes.

The differences between the various beadworking traditions show that cultures are not shaped by material but rather shape it to their own liking. Just as artists working in widely differing styles may use the same kind of paint, African beaders have created a wide body of work that expresses their cultural differences.
